AUSG issued the following statement after the Office of Campus Life launched The Market, a student-operated food pantry at American University.

The American University Student Government is excited to see the creation of The Market, a student-operated food pantry at AU. Food accessibility is a major issue not only at American University, but at universities and in communities across the country.

A survey conducted last year at AU found that 44 percent of students who responded experienced an instance in which they did not have enough food. An even higher number- 59 percent of students- reported knowing of another student that did not have an adequate food supply.

As the Office of Campus Life noted in its announcement of The Market, these numbers align with national findings on food insecurity. AUSG is thankful to the students led by Emily Dalgo CAS-SIS ‘17 and administrators including Dr. Fanta Aw for recognizing the need in our community and taking the initiative to rectify it.

AUSG encourages any student who is in need of food to sign up for access to The Market, which is located in Room 2 on the lower level of Letts Hall. Visit bit.ly/AccessTheMarket to sign up for access- approval occurs within two days and access to the room is gained via your AU ID card. The Market is open daily from 6am-12pm and from 2pm-2am.
