Departments

  • The Department of Academic Affairs is charged with the protecting the rights of students in the classroom. The director has the responsibility of reporting to the Senate and the Executives the effectiveness of the general education program, the academic integrity code, and the level of education on AU’s campus.

  • Artemas Ward Week is a program week that is dedicated to General Artemas Ward. You know the building. You know the circle. But do you know the man?

  • The newly-established Arts Council seeks to promote involvement with the arts. The Council's mission is to increase the visibility of student arts to the whole of AU and surrounding communities, bring artists and arts events to campus, facilitate student access to the robust and thriving local arts scene, and to organize an annual Spring Arts Festival celebrating the arts at AU.

  • The American University Transit Organization (AUTO) is the oldest student organization on campus. Through the direction of the Student Government’s AUTO Commissioner, AUTO provides low cost transportation services for AU’s various student, staff, and faculty organizations. AUTO also provides shuttle services to airports during breaks, off-campus events, and stores throughout the DC, VA, and MD areas.

  • The Board of Elections is a non-partisan group of students that ensure that fair elections are held. The SG holds elections two times per year. The spring election is the larger of the two in which the SG Executives, and the class (with the exception of the freshman class) and school councils are elected. The Undergraduate Senators and the freshman class are elected in the fall.

  • The Department of Design is responsible for all SG Design. From advertisements to event posters and digital images, it controls most things visual, and with quite good taste. If you need something publicized or woud like to add some images to your old documents, call Design.

  • Eagle Nights are weekly events that occur in the Tavern on Wednesday nights. Eagle Nights aims to always provide interesting and entertaining programming for the student body. Eagle Nights plan to work with other student groups to appeal to all students on campus. In upcoming weeks there will be a Class of 2007 event, Karaoke and a Civitas event.

  • For over twenty years, the SG has invited you to the biggest party of the year. This February, we will celebrate the founding of American University and the inauguration of Dr. Kerwin at the annual Founders' Day Ball, Friday February 8, 2008, at the beautiful Italian Embassy. The ball will kick-off a week full of events celebrating the past, present, and future of AU. Keep checking for more details!

  • IT is responsible for maintaining this website and the SG computers.

  • KPU is the award-winning, student-run campus speaker’s bureau. Since 1968, KPU has brought engaging, interesting, and relevant speakers to campus. The goal is to foster a debate on campus, provide a forum for ideas, and introduce our students, the leaders of tomorrow, to the leaders of today.

  • The Department of Outreach focuses on helping clubs collaborate with one another in order to improve the quality of campus life. Outreach also serves as a liaison between the Student Government and other student groups on campus.

  • The Student Government is proud to bring back the Spring Fling. The Spring Fling will be a spring semester program that will ease the minds of students as they begin to study for finals. Since this event is being revived after years of being dormant, please return in the spring to find more information and plans.

  • SAC is dedicated to protecting the rights of AU students. Advocates help students deal with problems ranging from judicial affairs, academic complaints, student accounts, financial accounts, financial aid, and campus housing. Get in trouble? SAC is here to help.

  • The Student Union Board, or as it is better known as SUB, is the oldest organization on campus. It is the department of the Student Government that brings live entertainment to campus in the form of bands, movies, and comedians.

  • Women's Initiative (WI) is an inclusive, non-partisan, Student Government-run organization that helps coordinate and advise campus departments and committees on programming and policy decisions that affect the women students, faculty, and staff of American University. Originally founded to encourage the Administration to create a Women's Resource Center, WI now provides oversight of campus safety and health resources by acting as an advocate for student concerns.
