The Fourth Judicial Board

Minutes of Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Call to Order

The fourth meeting of the Judicial Board was called to order on Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at 6:45 p.m.  Chairwoman Natasha Pereira called the meeting to order with Associate Justice Raymond Hear recording minutes.

Attendance

All associate justices were present.

Unfinished Business

I. The Legitimacy of the School of International Service (SIS) Senate
A. After the question and answer session with the head of the SIS Senate, Marck Goldstein and then private deliberations between the board, the Fourth Judicial Board’s ruling is that the SIS Senate cannot exist in its current structure.
B. The SIS Senate will have thirty days to comply with an official mandate from the board.
C. Chairwoman Pereira will notify the SIS Senate of the Judicial Board’s decision in three weeks time to give the board adequate preparation in solidifying their argument.
D. Discussion is prohibited with anyone outside the board.
E. The next Judicial Board meeting will solely be used to write the opinion.
II. Advertising for the Judicial Board Clerk
A. Possible advertising venues were suggested:
1. The University’s newspaper, The Eagle, was suggested by Associate Justice Austen Walsh; he will contact Jimm Philips.
2. Advertising through Facebook and through the Student Government was suggested by Chairwoman Pereira; she will contact Ashley Kongs.
3. The television screens located around campus, espceially in Mary Graydon Center (MGC), were also suggested; however, no one know who is in charge of them.
New Business

I. Inquiry Regarding Write-in Candidates
A. Do write-in candidates receive their positions through nomination, or do they automatically attain the position if they win the write-ins
B. The debate and decision for this inquiry were postponed until further notice in light of the SIS Senate issue; the decision of the Judicial Board should, however, be made before the spring semester elections.
II. Inquiry Box in the Student Government Office
A. Chairwoman Pereira suggested an “inquiry box” to be located in the Student Government office.  She stated the box would make the inquiry process more convenient for inquirers.
B. Vice Chair Timothy Hoagland stated that the inquiries answered through this avenue should be addressed with the same formality as an inquiry submitted through the conventional means.
III. The Website
A. Chairwoman Pereira suggested a quiz consisting of “Which JB member are you?” to be a part of the website.
B. Associate Justice Vanessa Steil will “hunt down” Jake, the IT person.
C. Chairwoman Pereira will contact Student Government President Seth Cutter to obtain contact information, particularly a phone number, concerning Jake, the IT person.
IV. Next Week’s Meeting
A. The purpose of the meeting next week will be to write the opinion regarding the SIS Senate.
B. Associate Justice Steil stated she would not be able to make the meeting but would come in earlier in the day to provide input to Chairwoman Pereira.
C. Vice Chair Hoagland stated 7:00 p.m. would work the best regarding the time of the meeting.
V. Miscellaneous
A. Gavel—Chairwoman Pereira will be getting it.
B. Robes—Vice Chair Hoagland wants them. . .and wigs too.

Adjournment

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

I. The date of the next meeting will be Tuesday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the executive suite; the meeting is optional and is intended for justices to input their opinion regarding the SIS Senate.  Chairwoman Pereira will e-mail everyone with the completed opinion.
