The Fourth Judicial Board
Minutes of Tuesday, October 28, 2008
Call to Order
The sixth meeting of the Judicial Board was called to order on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at 7:15 p.m. Chairwoman Natasha Pereira called the meeting to order with Associate Justice Raymond Hear recording minutes.
Attendance
All associate justices were present except for Vice Chair Timothy Hoagland. However, his notes were presented by Chairwoman Pereira.
New Business
I. Andrew, The Student Activities Counselor
A. Chairwoman Pereira brought to the attention of the board that they had a Student Activities Counselor for which they were free to talk to about Student Government.
II. Judicial Board Phone
A. The Judicial Board has a phone and number as stated by Chairwoman Pereira.
B. Chairwoman Pereira further stated the phone had four messages, but none of them were pressing.
Unfinished Business
I. Opinion of the Board Regarding the SIS Undergraduate Senate
A. Copes of the opinion were handed out by Chairwoman Pereira to be taken home and edited by Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.
B. If justices desire their middle initials placed within the opinion’s signature line, they must notify Chairwoman Pereira as to what their middle intial is.
II. Emily Ann’s Inquiry
A. Chairwoman Pereira reintroduced Emily Ann’s inquiry to the board. However, decisions will not be made until, at least, the next meeting of the Judicial Board.
B. Justices are to take the inquiry home and review it and return with an opinion.
C. Chairwoman Pereira stated that, after Emily Ann’s inquiry, the board will have no more new business. Consequently, the board may not meet every week, and may, instead, meet every other week. However, a schedule has not been determined at this time.
III. The Judicial Board’s Website
A. Biographies are still to be handed in to Chairwoman Pereira.
B. Sections for the website were assigned:
1. “How to submit an inquiry”—Chairwoman Pereira
2. “What we’re working on and what we’ve worked on”—Vice Chairman Timothy Hoagland
3. “Welcome Section”—Associate Justice Hear
4. “Ask your Judicial Board”—Associate Justice Austen Walsh
5. “History of the Judicial Board”—Associate Justice Vanessa Steil
6. “Which member of the Judicial Board are you most like?”—Chairwoman Pereira
C. Website Section Assignments
1. Chairwoman Pereira stated the sections were to be turned in to her by Tuesday, November 4. However, Associate Justice Steil brought up the fact that, if the website remains unalterable, the due date for the website section assignments could be postponed.
D. Website and Jake, the IT person
1. Jake has not responded to Associate Justice Steil’s e-mail. Associate Justice Steil is considering sending the same e-mail she sent to Jake to Communications Director Ashley Kongs in hopes of getting answers.
2. Chairwoman Pereira stated she would talk to President Seth Cutter about issues with Jake and the website during his office hours.
E. Document Templates
1. Associate Justice Hear stated he will create a generic inquiry template.
2. Chairwoman Pereira will create a manilla envelope for physically submitting inquiries and storing the templates.
F. Archives of the Judicial Board (i.e. Nat Van—Operation Archives)
1. Chairwoman Pereira stated the Judicial Board had a cabinet to store “anything in.”
2. Associate Justice Steil brought to the table the Judicial Board archives of past decisions.
3. Chairwoman Pereira expressed that the archives should be stored in as a hardcopy in the cabinet and as a digital copy on the website.
a) The hardcopy would require a binder, which Chairwoman Pereira stated President Cutter would furnish.
b) The binder color was suggested to be black by Associate Justice Steil.
IV. Judicial and Ethical Committee
A. Associate Justice Walsh is spearheading this committee.
B. Questions that must be considered are:
1. What should the committee look like? Should it include members of other boards
2. What would be the role of the committee and the responsibilities of committee members?
C. Chairwoman Pereira recommended Associate Justice Walsh speak with Parliamentarian Anthony Dunham about suggestions for the committee.
D. Associate Justice Walsh stated that President Seth had mentioned a member of the Student Government, in the previous year, had begun writing guidelines for the committee but graduated before they were completed. Subsequently, Associate Justice Walsh will look for those guidelines in hopes of utilizing them as a starting point.
E. Chairwoman Pereira expressed that the standards of the Judicial and Ethical Committee, whatever they will be, will apply to everyone—not solely the Judicial Board.
Adjournment
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 pm.
