Welcome to the Senate!
They Undergraduate Senate is the legislative body of the SG that represents and works for you. We meet every Sunday to discuss, debate, and work to solve the issues that are most important to students at American. In the past, the Senate has taken up a variety of issues, ranging from text book prices, to shuttle services, to dining options on campus, and to the establishment of a campus-wide smoking policy. Big issue areas emerging this year include Meal Plan Reform, AU Shuttles, and Gender-Neutral Housing.
Not a political science major? No problem! The Senate’s diverse make-up includes theater majors, philosophy majors, and gender studies majors, as well as international relations majors and political science majors. To fit these many interests, members of the Senate may choose specific areas of focus and then select their committee assignment based upon those preferences. This session’s committees are on Campus Life and Programming, Academic Affairs, and Students Rights and University Affairs.
The thirty Members of the Senate draft legislation, engage in floor debate, attend weekly committee meetings, meet with their constituents, and are often asked to attend meetings between President Cutter, Speaker MacCracken, and AU administrators. If the Senate sounds like the place for you, get involved! The Fourth Undergraduate Senate is underway and we always encourage members of the great AU community to attend meetings and let us know what they think! Meetings are every Sunday at 2:30pm in Kogod 118.
