My name is Paola de Orbeta-Ramírez. I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am sophomore this semester and I am majoring in political science, and pursuing a minor in French. I am passionate about surfing, drawing, traveling, learning diverse languages and finding ways to empower young girls and women. What inspired me most to join WI and gain a special interest in my position as an Anti-Violence Programming Coordinator, was a past experience during my senior year in Puerto Rico. I had the opportunity of working with Habitat for Humanity, where we raised funds and constructed a house for a single mother and her family who had surpassed a critical period of domestic abuse. As I learned more about the existence and abundance of cases like this one, not only in the island but in the United States as well, I was even more encouraged to find ways to create awareness and be able to produce a positive and safe environment for all women, girls, and any individual who has dealt with this issue.
